Tōtara
Podocarpus totara
One of NZ’s most culturally important ‘rākau rangatira’ or ‘noble trees’ that can live 1000 years or more, but can also be topiarised and clipped into fabulous forms for Japanese- and topiary-inspired gardens. In late summer, female trees produce succulent red fruits that each have a bright green seed at the tip – sweet treats for people and birds. Take care not to confuse them with the poisonous yew tree! Totara can be grown in a wide range of soil and site conditions, including exposed sites and is relatively unpalatable to stock, but not possums.
Leaves and wood contain Volatile Organic Compounds such as Totarol, which has antimicrobial activity (Totarol - Wikipedia) that helps wood resist rot – hence the large trees’ value for waka, along with its straight grain. Needle-sharp leaves are soft when young, so target these for scrunching to release the distinctive smell. Oils from totara
