Living Facade

Akapukaea

Tecomanthe speciosa

An incredibly robust tropical vine found naturally only on one island, Manawatawhi, Three Kings Islands, where goats reduced the population to one plant in 1946. The magnificent glossy deep green leaves are highly palatable – not a problem for most green screens! No seed observed in the wild.  Bunches of large creamy-green tubular flowers are pollinated by tui (at least) and develop into bigger-than-banana-shaped seed pods. Fabulous – can be placed on wide-spaced wires as long as they’re strong! ‘Tecomonster’ can climb 5 stories (20 m) if given enough rooting volume and free-draining soils
