Living Facade
Akapukaea
Tecomanthe speciosa
An incredibly robust tropical vine found naturally only on one island, Manawatawhi (Three Kings Islands), where goats reduced the population to one plant in 1946, which has never been seen to set seed. The magnificent glossy deep green leaves are highly palatable but this is not a problem for most urban green screens! Bunches of large creamy-green tubular flowers are pollinated by tui (at least) and develop into bigger-than-banana-shaped seed pods. This fabulous vine can be placed on wide-spaced wires as long as they’re strong, as the plants can get very large (and heavy), climbing 5 stories (20 m) if given enough rooting volume and free-draining soils
